Jolly Pumpkin shut down its Midtown Detroit spot at 441 W. Canfield. Chef Brad Greenhill and chef Michael Goldberg plan to launch their Spiedo concept there this summer.

The space will swap sour beers and wood-fired pizzas for a "Mediterranean-ish" idea centered on vertical spits. Rotisserie meats packed with flavor will anchor the menu, joined by grilled vegetables. These two chefs debuted their first spot in Ann Arbor back in 2023 at 307 S. Fifth.

"The Detroit one will be a little bit different in that it's in a much larger space and we're going to expand the menu a little bit, at least for dinner," said Brad Greenhill, per The Detroit News.

Ann Arbor's location runs on just two rotisseries and a griddle. The second restaurant on Canfield will add an oven and a grill to the mix.

Brad Greenhill earned recognition through his work at Takoi in Detroit. His Thai eatery sits at 2520 Michigan in Corktown, and this month it turns 10. He ran Magnet too—a flame-powered restaurant in Detroit that closed when the pandemic hit.

Michael Goldberg has teamed up with him. Architect Ishtiaq Rafiuddin will work on the project, just as he did for Takoi and their Ann Arbor location.

"We're hoping to open this summer," said Greenhill, adding that the space doesn't need much work. "It shouldn't take that long, but knock on wood. You never know with these things."

Hours will cover lunch and dinner seven days a week. A full bar will serve guests. Entrees might feature whole fish, half chicken, large skewers or kebabs. Counter service will handle the lunch crowd, while dinner will get full-service treatment.

"It'll have a little bit of a Magnet vibe," Greenhill said. "It'll be an elevated-casual experience."

The brewery chain will relaunch later this year somewhere else in Detroit, though in a smaller space. The Midtown spot had served the neighborhood for around 11 years.

The shuttered taproom sat on the south side of W. Canfield Street, squeezed between Bon Bon Bon dessert shop and Third Man Records, Jack White's record store. Mario's Northern Italian Cuisine, Shinola Cafe and Cobb's Corner Bar are other nearby eateries.
