Oakland County gained 5,788 residents in 2025, wrote Kurt Metzger in an Oakland County Times analysis. This led all Michigan counties. The gain brought the county's total to 1,288,237 people, though the increase fell short of earlier projections by more than 8,500.

The Census Bureau revised its 2022 through 2024 estimates after discovering immigration numbers were lower than projected. Officials had estimated 42,178 immigrants arrived during those years. The actual total was 29,150.

Between 2020 and 2025, the area saw 64,894 births and 62,775 deaths. Domestic migration subtracted 28,050 residents while immigration added 38,982 during that period.

Immigration drove most of the gains. It offset outmigration, but that gap is narrowing. The 2025 estimates show 7,688 immigrants arrived.

The county's population increase represented a 0.45% gain. Statewide, Michigan grew by 0.6%.

Of Michigan's 83 counties, 47 posted gains. Wayne County grew by 0.2%. Monroe added 0.09%. Lapeer increased 0.27%. Genesee County declined by 0.05%.

Metzger pointed out that while celebrating increases makes sense, longer-term trends and overall needs require attention. The analysis pointed to economic and policy factors that could influence future growth.

The Census Bureau calculates annual estimates using four components: births, deaths, immigration, and domestic migration. The agency sets a base year and applies those factors to determine household totals, then adds group quarters residents.
