The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Climate Prediction Center released a 30-day outlook for March 2026. Rain and snow are expected to come more often than usual across Southeast Michigan. Temps may rise just a bit. A Pacific-influenced weather pattern is pushing milder air across much of the country, which explains the shift.

Detroit Metro Airport records show March usually brings a high near 46°F and a low near 29°F. About 2.43 inches of rain or melted snow falls during the month. Snowfall averages six inches.

The temperature outlook for March 2026 shows warmer readings for much of the central U.S. into the Ohio Valley, but the far Northeast hovers near equal chances. Southeast Michigan sits close to that transition zone.

The precipitation signal is clearer. NOAA predicts above-normal precipitation in the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley regions, so the odds lean toward a wetter-than-normal March total here.

Whether precipitation falls as rain or snow will depend on the week and sometimes the day, according to Click On Detroit. Snow could blanket the ground one morning, then 60-degree temps might arrive a few days later.

These outlooks are probabilities compared to the 1991-2020 normal period. They don't tell you how many storms will happen. They can't predict what happens on any single day.

The latest official forecast from CPC points to a more progressive weather pattern heading into early and mid-March, which tends to bring milder air across much of the nation.

March in the region is known as a "two seasons in one month" kind of deal. One week can feel like spring. The next week can bring back winter boots.
