Christ Church Cranbrook started a four-year project called "Faith in Detroit." The money comes from a $5 million grant. Lilly Endowment Inc. provided the funds, which will power this work about how people understand their faith in Detroit and why Metro Detroiters still believe in their city.
Detroit PBS signed on as the main media partner, handling the bulk of storytelling work. The Ecumenical Theological Seminary jumped in as a partner too.
The Rev. Dr. William Danaher runs the program as rector of Christ Church Cranbrook. He met with Stephen Henderson at the Bloomfield Hills church. The Rev. Dr. Theodore Turman, president of the Ecumenical Theological Seminary, joined them.
Dr. Turman explained what pulled him toward this work, discussing what faith means and how stories have shaped the Black church over generations.
Stories will come from across the metro area. Fr. Danaher laid out the plan and listed who's working together on this four-year push.
The three met at Christ Church Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills, talking through how the grant money will fund collecting and spreading faith stories around the region.
