Camps across metro Detroit are booking fast. Some have run out of spots.
Parents who delay signing up their kids might discover limited choices as openings vanish earlier than in previous years.
The YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit runs day camps at eight locations and two overnight camps. Many sites have hit 50% capacity. Troy officials report they reached full enrollment within the first week after opening registration.
Judnard Henry, Youth & Family Director at the Y, urged families to act soon. "All of our camps across metro Detroit are seeing high demand, and we're looking for families to sign up," said Henry, according to WXYZ.
Margaret Edwartowski, a Berkley parent, has put her son Oscar in YMCA programs for years. "Day camp was really crucial for having a place for him to be that we felt like was safe and enriched and, you know, it's not screen time, and it's like active, interactive, physical social time," said Edwartowski, per WXYZ.
Oakland County Parks and Recreation is offering Outdoor Discovery Camps for the first time this year. Campers will be able to go canoeing and kayaking as well as use hiking trails and an archery range.
Pricing varies by location. YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit charges members $295 per week and non-members $340 through April 30. Oakland County Parks charges residents $300 and non-residents $325 per week. Boys and Girls Club of Troy starts at $130 per child per week, with registration opening March 2. Detroit Temple Salvation Army starts at $35 per child per week.
