Maurice Imhoff will discuss his book about the 1st Michigan Colored Regiment at the Southfield Public Library on February 11, 2026, as per Oakland County 115. The talk starts at 6:30 p.m.

His book chronicles Michigan's sole African American regiment during the Civil War. Soldiers joined up when the nation was splitting apart, then battled on fields and in camps for their freedom and dignity.

Imhoff weaves individual accounts with hard facts. He brings these men back to life—men who defied slavery and stared down hate.

The author has penned several works on Michigan's past. This time, he zeroes in on the troops who comprised this unit and what they gave to the war.

Despite facing scorn and prejudice, the regiment proved crucial during the conflict. Troops fought under the Union banner while demanding respect and fair treatment.

Books will be on sale. Imhoff will sign them after he speaks.

The library is running this event as part of its speaker series. Residents can learn about a piece of state history that doesn't get much attention.

The 1st Michigan Colored Regiment stands as a vital chapter in Civil War accounts. These soldiers helped decide the war's end and pushed the struggle for civil rights forward.

Details are posted on the library's website. Throughout each year, the Southfield Public Library brings in speakers on various subjects.
