Topgolf Auburn Hills closed Monday when freezing rain and powerful winds ripped apart the safety nets. The storm hit hard, as reported by The Independent.

Video captured the netting collapse Sunday as ice accumulated on the 150-foot structure. Layers of ice grew heavier. The weight became too much, sending nets crashing down while customers watched from inside. A High Wind Warning had been issued for Southeast Michigan, with gusts reaching 50 miles per hour.

Management said player and employee safety comes first. Anyone with reservations will hear about refunds or new dates.

"We have secured the site and are working diligently to obtain the specialized equipment required to repair the netting and support cables," a spokesperson said in a statement provided to a local media outlet. "We appreciate the community's patience as we work to meet our rigorous safety standards before reopening."

Those nets serve a crucial purpose—they contain golf balls during play so nothing escapes. Without them, the venue can't open its doors. This closure hits at a difficult time, right when families on vacation hunt for things to do that blend indoor comfort with outdoor fun.

The winter blast overwhelmed the northern Oakland County structure. Rain turned to ice on contact Sunday, building up until support cables snapped under the strain.

Operations are suspended from Dec. 29 through Dec. 31, and the planned New Year's Eve party is cancelled. See updates to business hours at the official TopGolf Auburn Hills website. Crews have been battling cold conditions to finish repairs.

Updates about reopening will appear on the Topgolf website. The High Wind Warning for Metro Detroit was downgraded to a Wind Advisory Monday evening and expired at 9 p.m.
