The Detroit Zoo confirmed three lion cubs arrived Nov. 23 and 24 at its Royal Oak location. Amirah, a 9-year-old African lioness, delivered two females and one male.

A fourth cub didn't make it. The mother and her trio have been resting in a quiet den, hidden from guests.

"At five weeks old, we can now determine that she has two girls and one boy," the zoo said. "Her cubs are healthy and growing fast – gaining almost a pound each in just four days!"

Kalu, the father, lives at the zoo with Asha, the cubs' aunt. African lions face threats across their home ranges, with some populations in danger of disappearing.

"Welcoming these cubs is not only heartwarming — it's a meaningful milestone in the Detroit Zoo's commitment to conservation and the future of this iconic species," the zoo said according to CBS News.

The birth marks progress for lion protection programs. Wild populations shrink as habitat loss and other dangers mount, which makes breeding at accredited zoos crucial for keeping the species alive.

Amirah will keep her three cubs in their private den while they grow. Staff members watch them as they get stronger and more active.

The zoo hasn't revealed when guests can see the young lions.
