Sterling Heights launched a Little Free Sled Library at Delia Park. Kids and families can grab sleds without paying a dime. The program runs until February or whenever the snow disappears.
You'll find it near the pavilion in the north part of the park, close to where people leave their cars. Officials purchased 30 sleds to get things started.
"The Parks and Recreation Department and the Sterling Heights Public Library are continually looking for ways to improve quality of life in Sterling Heights," said Kyle Langlois, Parks and Recreation director, in a news release per WXYZ. "Working together on this project to provide recreational opportunities for residents without the need to invest in or store equipment is a way we can bring no-cost fun to the city and encourage people to get outside and recreate no matter the time of year."
Langlois praised the library for covering the costs and thanked the Park Maintenance crew for constructing the sled holder. This partnership between departments helps families who can't buy winter gear or don't have room to keep it.
Library Director Tammy Turgeon said the program extends the library's mission beyond books. "We love the idea of meeting residents where they are, whether that's outside enjoying the snow or inside curled up with a good book," Turgeon said in a news release, according to WXYZ.
Sterling Heights already has Little Free Libraries scattered across six spots. Book-sharing stations sit at Dodge Park, Washington Square, Moravian, Farmstead, and Avis parks.
Want more places to sled? Officials say six additional parks work great for winter fun. Chappelle Park, Hampton Park, Magnolia Park, Meadowview Park, Carpathia Park, and Beaver Creek Park all give sledders what they need.
If you've got sleds sitting in your garage collecting dust, you can contact the library to arrange a drop-off. This marks the first time officials have loaned out free gear for winter play.
