The Marshall Mathers Foundation handed out more than 1,000 winter coats to kids at Bel Air Luxury Cinema in Detroit on Saturday. Hundreds of families showed up despite the bitter cold.

The cinema became a gathering spot for the 17th annual giveaway. Event organizer Dody Johnson watched as families queued up for new coats provided through a partnership with Forman Mills.

"I've seen it grow from Eminem's idea to this," said Johnson, as reported by Click On Detroit.

Swifty McVay of D12 attended the event and talked about the rapper's commitment to helping Detroit. "He's always had his heart on his sleeve. This is big for him cause he's been super generous since the day I met him," McVay said, as reported by Click On Detroit.

Nathan Moore brought his children to receive coats. "It's cold out here. You got a thousand kids in hoodies, nobody wearing coats, so this is a good idea," Moore said, as reported by Eminem News.

Johnson mentioned that some families arrived wrapped in blankets because they lacked proper winter clothing. The need remains real.

"It's not just because it's free -- it's because there's really a need," she said, as reported by Eminem News.

Royce 5'9 joined the foundation leadership in 2020 and now serves as chief executive. He has talked about the foundation's work in underserved communities across the city and surrounding areas.

"My job is to make sure funds are disseminated to the right places and in the right amounts," Royce said, as reported by Eminem News. "Ever since the pandemic, there's a fund in place that is set aside specifically for Black and Brown issues in underserved communities."

The foundation started a mental health initiative with funding in the millions. Work begins in Detroit and expands to other areas.

McVay said watching families receive warm clothing brings him happiness each year. "I love looking forward to it, to see their smiles and excitement. It just brings me joy," he stated, as reported by Eminem News.

The rapper doesn't attend these events or speak about his charitable work. Most information comes from those who work with the foundation or from families who receive help.
