The Blue Water Bridge will bump tolls for Canada-bound traffic to $5 (USD) on Dec. 1, as per Sarnia News Today. That's up from $4 (USD). Michigan's Department of Transportation has pushed rates higher two years running.
MDOT revealed plans for the hike last year after polling the public. This marks another shift in what drivers pay at the crossing between nations.
US-bound passenger cars fork over $7 (CAD) to cross as of April 1, 2025, per the Federal Bridge Corporation. Trucks? They face varying rates depending on how they pay.
Commercial rigs pay $5 (CAD) per axle with the Connexion pre-paid account. Without it, drivers using debit or credit cards get charged $7 (CAD) per axle, as per Windsor News Today.
Cash isn't accepted here. Officials stopped making cash transactions earlier this year.
Rates are now split based on which way you're headed and how you pay. Canada-bound vehicles pay in US dollars, while US-bound traffic settles up in Canadian dollars.
MDOT hadn't touched tolls for 14 years before implementing the first bump last year.
The Federal Bridge Corporation handles US-bound toll collection, while MDOT runs the Canada-bound side of this crossing between countries.
Drivers must prep for electronic payments when crossing either way. No exceptions. The cashless setup makes credit cards, debit cards, or pre-paid accounts mandatory for every vehicle.
Commercial haulers pocket $2 (CAD) savings per axle by using the Connexion pre-paid account versus swiping cards. For trucks making repeated trips, those dollars pile up fast.
The new $5 (USD) rate for entering Canada kicks in within two weeks. Travelers should factor in the steeper cost when mapping out trips across the border.
