The Furniture Bank of Metro Detroit started the "1,000 Beds Challenge." They want to collect $250,000 before the New Year. Twin mattresses, foundations, pillows, and bedding will go to kids who don't have beds. The drive aims to help around 20,000 kids in Oakland, Wayne, and Macomb Counties who sleep in relatives' beds. on sofas, or right on floors.

One complete twin bed set runs $250. People can chip in any amount at the group's website—whether they're individuals, families, companies, schools, or faith groups.

"It's heartbreaking that so many children and teens in our community don't have a bed which represents so much more than a piece of furniture; it offers safety, comfort, privacy, and dignity," said Diane Charles, president and CEO of the organization. "Studies show that when a child has their own bed, they sleep, learn, and behave better," they said, according to Newsbreak.

This 57-year-old group has supplied necessary furniture and mattresses to over 80,000 families across the three counties. In 2024, they distributed 17,000 items valued at $960,000.

Serta Restokraft Mattress Company contributed. For every nine twin mattresses that get funded, they'll toss in one more. ABC Warehouse is backing the push too, by telling customers about the drive. They're also giving 100 percent of sales from custom Cozy Up for a Cause holiday-themed loungewear to the cause. It's sold only at the online store.

"At ABC Warehouse, our brand stands for much more than great deals; it stands for creating a better home life and good night's sleep is foundational to that," said Jessica Lajcaj, director of advertising and marketing, as reported by Newsbreak. She added, "Partnering with the Furniture Bank of Metro Detroit allows ABC Warehouse to extend our commitment to value and service directly into the community, giving children the comfortable, restful nights they need to thrive."

The Pontiac-based group is the oldest furniture bank in North America—founded way back in 1968.
