Detroit landed at 179th out of 182 cities in WalletHub's 2025 Safest Cities in America report. Only three major cities got worse marks. The Motor City did poorly in Home and Community Safety, which was one measurement that shaped the rankings.
WalletHub examined 182 cities using 41 safety indicators. They checked financial security, natural disaster risk, and community safety factors.
The study weighed several categories that affect how safe a city is, and Home & Community Safety represented one area where the Michigan city struggled most. It had one of the weakest showings in that particular measurement across all cities evaluated.
Not every Michigan city deals with the same safety problems. Grand Rapids came in at number 82. The difference in rankings between the two Michigan cities spans nearly 100 positions.
Community safety factors include crime rates and public security, while financial security measures examine economic stability and resident financial health.
Natural disaster risk worked in favor of the southeastern Michigan city when compared to other parts of the country, because the area doesn't get hit by hurricanes, earthquakes, or mudslides that plague other regions.
WalletHub releases the Safest Cities in America report each year. The 2025 edition keeps the same structure as previous years. Cities show wide variation in safety metrics across the country.
