WDIV-TV will broadcast Detroit's yearly tree lighting at Campus Martius Park this Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. The Downtown Detroit Partnership struck its first exclusive deal with the station for TV coverage.
"Detroit's Tree Lighting is more than just flipping a switch — it's a moment that kicks off the season and brings our entire city together," Bob Ellis, vice president and general manager of WDIV, said in a statement, according to The Detroit News.
Viewers can catch every minute of the celebration. The station plans wall-to-wall coverage across its TV channel, website, and streaming platforms throughout the day.
Standing tall at 62 feet, the majestic tree will shine bright in the heart of downtown. Its glow marks the start of winter festivities across the city center.
Spectators will see skilled figure skaters glide across the rink, hear musicians fill the air with seasonal tunes, and even catch a glimpse of Santa. Street merchants will offer special items to mark the occasion.
Each winter, this celebration draws crowds by the thousands. Streets buzz with excitement as neighbors gather to welcome the holiday spirit.
Through its broadcast reach, WDIV aims to share the magic with viewers at home. "WDIV is proud to partner with the DDP to bring this celebration into homes across Metro Detroit in a way that's never been done before — blending the excitement of the live event with the magic of broadcast," Ellis said.
