A British pub named Cannons will soon welcome guests at 15241 Mack Avenue in Detroit's Morningside district. This two-floor establishment features a traditional pub that fills the ground level, which will offer live entertainment, and an upper floor with an open-air patio.
At the main bar, patrons will find British brews, mixed drinks, and wine selections. "It's going to be like a bar in the style of 1812," said Joe Shields per The Detroit News.
The kitchen sticks to traditional methods, shunning new gadgets. Fresh Massachusetts oysters share menu space with cockles and Welsh rarebit. Weekend meals let guests pick their morning feast—English, French, American, or Canadian style.
As for the decor, rich woods add so much character, and vintage seating is a charming touch. American copper pennies shine from within the bar top, while the drink list puts beer front and center.
"We're going to pride ourselves on our Guinness. Our Guinness is going to be on tower by itself. We've looked into all the right temperatures, the right mixtures of CO2," Shields said to The Detroit News.
Detroit's Zak Pashak started this venture with London-born Joe Shields, who knows Detroit's food scene well. Pashak's past work runs the gamut from bike manufacturing to running music venues.
The second floor will also offer entertainment during weekends, as brunch service unfolds. Detroit icons Derrick May and Juan Atkins plan to perform on the second level this fall. During weekdays, Pashak wants local groups to use the space.
"If there's a group of people who want to play Risk, or burlesque people, or stand-up comedy, we have an open venue with a small stage and I'm looking to program it," Pashak said to The Detroit News.
Before Cannons, the spot housed Lost River, a tiki bar that closed in 2023. Pashak drew ideas from Greenfield Village's Eagle Tavern and Texas music spots.
From the rooftop, guests can see Morningside while enjoying BBQs and music sets. Find opening updates on Instagram at @cannonsbar.
