At Southeastern High School, a new 11,000-square-foot training wing now stands ready. Students can work with welding tools and computer-guided machines in state-of-the-art labs built for hands-on learning.
This marks the first success in the district's bold $700 million plan to transform its schools. Young minds now access top-notch gear in spaces that mirror real workplaces, preparing them for tomorrow's jobs. Short sessions mix with longer training blocks to match actual work conditions.
"In the end, we're not going to rebuild the city if we're not rebuilding neighborhoods, and you can't rebuild neighborhoods if you're not rebuilding schools," said Dr. Nikolai Vitti, superintendent of Detroit Public Schools Community District. His comments were made while he spoke at an event where the project was unveiled.
The wing opens paths to work and college. At the unveiling, Principal Maurice El-Amin puts it simply: "It just gives them a different option upon completion of high school, what they might want to go into."
For student A'niyah Ellis, the center sparks big dreams. While speaking to the event's audience, she stated: "I do want to do trade...I just find it fascinating, and I want to do it for me." Her next step? Two years at community college to weigh her choices.
Dr. Vitti had more to say at the event, as reported by The Metro Detroit News. He referenced Detroit and what it needs, saying: "In the city, we do not have a talent gap, but an opportunity gap."
Current seniors wish they'd started sooner. "The 12th graders already wish they had this chance," Ellis shared.
The wing should draw more kids to Southeastern while building their skills for the future. Built on time and within costs, it sets a strong example for upcoming school projects across Detroit.
