Detroit's fire crews will host three public sessions about battery safety this October. The free events, running from the 5th through the 11th, will teach safe practices for electronic device batteries.

"Educating our community about fire prevention has always been one of our top priorities," said Executive Fire Commissioner Chuck Simms. "This year, we are investing heavily in making sure every Detroit resident understands the risks of lithium-ion batteries and has the tools to keep their family safe."

The sessions will take place at three spots across the city. Engine 56 kicks off the series, followed by Engine 54, with the final event at Kemeny Recreation Center. Each location offers safety demos, life-saving skills training, and activities for the whole family.

Fire Marshal Don Thomas stressed the rising danger of battery-related blazes. "Lithium-ion batteries are safe when handled properly, but they need to be treated with care," Thomas said. "We want residents to know the importance of buying listed products, charging them safely, and recycling responsibly."

Visitors can try out safety skills in the department's "Smoke House." Staff will show proper fire extinguisher use and guide families through escape planning. Kids will get a kick out of the department's clown performers.

Community Relations Chief James Harris spoke about mixing education with entertainment. "Our events are fun, interactive, and full of practical take-home lessons that can save lives," Harris said.

Target returns as the main backer. Support also comes from Team Wellness Center, Griffin Plastic Surgery, Cherry Monkeys, Elite Gameplay and Little Caesars.

Fire officials stress these key points: stick to approved chargers, keep charging devices on hard surfaces, and skip overnight charging. Check batteries for signs of wear and take old ones to proper recycling spots.

Buy only from trusted sellers and watch for safety certification marks on products. Working smoke alarms remain your best defense against fires of any kind.
