A new push to aid veterans launched in Oakland County after budget cuts threatened vital services. The "Be a Hero, Support a Hero" campaign, working with Oakland Thrive, started September 29, 2025.
"As grant funding for veterans' programs is getting cut, this is the time to come together as a community to ensure our Oakland County veterans are supported, provided resources and treated with the dignity and respect they deserve," said County Executive David Coulter according to Oakland County Times.
Last year's success stories show what's at stake. Staff connected at least 2,500 former service members with crucial benefits at outreach events. The office distributed $242,000 in food assistance cards while supplying 2,500 boxes of groceries to those in need.
Transportation remains critical. Staff arranged over 10,000 no-cost trips in 2024, taking veterans to medical appointments, social visits, and daily tasks. Five major food distribution events made sure 2,000 veterans didn't go hungry.
Companies can step up through tiered sponsorships ranging from $10,000 to $50,000. Sponsors gain visibility through digital displays, print media, streaming platforms and radio spots.
Those wanting to make a difference can visit Oakland Thrive online or dial 248-858-8016. Contributions directly fund transportation, community events and meal programs.
With budget cuts threatening to slash services across the county, timing is crucial. Every cent goes straight to veteran aid.
