A massive green space will soon transform Detroit's waterfront. The 22-acre Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Centennial Park opens its gates October 25-26, 2025, weaving fresh paths between city blocks.
At 1801 W. Jefferson Avenue, the site will spring to life with a "Harvest Fest" - two days of music, food trucks, and activities. This new park links three key areas: Corktown, Mexicantown, and Roosevelt Park, giving locals direct access to the water.
Thanks to a $50 million gift from the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation back in 2018, the space now boasts several key spots. Kids can climb and play in the Delta Dental Play Garden. Athletes will find year-round courts at the William Davidson Sport House. A sprawling two-acre water feature, the Huron-Clinton Metroparks Water Garden, serves both as a wildlife spot and a teaching space.
What started as a plain parking lot bought by the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy in 2007 turned into West Riverfront by 2014. More cash from the Wilson Foundation in 2023 kept building plans moving forward.
The site fits into a bigger picture. It connects to the Southwest Greenway, which runs from Michigan Central Station straight to Jefferson Avenue. This path then meets the Joe Louis Greenway - a 27-mile circuit joining four cities: Detroit, Hamtramck, Highland Park, and Dearborn.
This work aims to fix old wounds. Past building projects, like I-375 and the wider Jefferson Avenue, split up neighborhoods and wiped out the historic Black Bottom area.
The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy will watch over the park, adding to the seven miles of public water access they already maintain.
