After locals backed a tax increase in August, Novi will spend $120 million across 25 years to build a fresh public safety hub and update its fire stations.

At the September 15 Finance and Administration Committee meeting, DLZ and HED showed off their plans. Now, experts at Plante Moran Realpoint talk with both firms about the finer points.

"Have them sharpen their pencils and come back," said Novi Mayor Justin Fischer at the Monday night City Council meeting, according to The Detroit News.

The main safety hub, costing $72 million, will stand at Lee BeGole Drive and 11 Mile Road. Two fresh fire stations, each priced at $13 million, will sit at 42000 W. 13 Mile Road and in the 22000 block of Venture Drive. Station 4 on Grand River Avenue needs $2 million in upgrades.

Built four decades ago, the old stations weren't made for a mixed workforce. Today's staff includes 15 women on the police force and five in the fire squad.

The updated buildings will fit 73 cops and a mix of 98 fire workers. The fire squad runs with 28 full-timers and 70 part-time staff.

On October 6, Plante Moran will tell the council which firm should run the show.

The 1-mill tax bump that got the green light will cover building costs. From start to finish, the whole thing should take about five years to wrap up.
