Major road shutdowns hit Detroit on September 22 as bridge construction impacts key routes. The construction cuts through I-75, I-96, Fort Street, and Livernois Avenue. Though detour routes are marked, officials warn motorists to plan for delays when traveling through the area.

See below for specific route closure details:

  • I-75 North: Lane closures near Clark Street and the Ambassador Bridge until September 27.
  • I-75 South: Service Drive remains closed 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, between Green Street and Lewerentz Street, until October 17.
  • I-96 East: Nightly lane closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., between Warren Avenue and Pacific Avenue, until September 26. Closures will continue through October for signage work between MLK Blvd. and Selden Street.
  • Fort Street: Lane closures between Crawford Street and Cavalry Street until October 1. Detours impact traffic patterns when connecting to Livernois Avenue.
  • Livernois Avenue and West Lafayette Blvd.: Closed at I-75 Service Drive until Fall 2025.

The builder, Bridging North America, warns that October brings more closures. Signs point to detours, trips take extra time, and motorists have a while to wait for a return to normal traffic patterns.

Despite the frustrations of road construction, the project is expected to bring needed relief to the area's traffic corridor. The Gordie Howe Bridge bridge, once complete, adds a vital link between Detroit and Windsor, ON. It will split heavy traffic with the current crossing, making border trips smoother and faster for everyone.
