Plans for a mixed-use space in Downtown Oakland got the go-ahead from Lawrence City officials at a recent Common Council meeting.
Scott Perry pitched his vision. "The goal is to uplift the community while respecting its roots," he said at the meeting, according to CitizenPortal. His team aims to blend new amenities with the district's historic charm.
Right now, the area boasts only one restaurant for grabbing a quick bite. However, the 6,000-square-foot development aims to change all that; guests will soon be able to choose between casual coffee sips or full sit-down meals.
Outside, in line with the city's sustainability goals, a working and educational garden will take shape. The on-site chef plans to grow fresh ingredients for the restaurant, just steps from the kitchen.
Still, traffic concerns and limited parking options sparked debate among council members. Perry's group says they're committed to collaborating with city officials to maintain safety as the proposal moves forward. Perry's group could slim down the street, forcing drivers to slow their pace, or increase accessibility to the site.
Despite concerns, the mix of dining and public gathering space would fill a gap in the current Downtown Oakland. Officials want more spots where residents can meet and mingle downtown, fostering a greater sense of community and celebrating Oakland's unique character.
Further discussion and planning are scheduled to ensure the project addresses both its challenges and the needs of the Downtown Oakland community. Only once those approvals are made can shovels hit the ground.
