On Wednesday, a Southfield law firm distributed 100 car seats to local families, just ahead of National Child Passenger Safety Week. Police officers joined the effort near the firm's location.
After reviewing 500 applications, Kajy Law selected recipients for Graco Contender Slim Convertible Car Seats. "Unfortunately, I've had a lot of cases where the minor was not in a car seat or the car seat was improperly installed," said Lawrence Kajy, founder and CEO of Kajy Law Firm, according to WXYZ.
These seats adapt as children grow, supporting infants through kids weighing 60 to 70 pounds. "That's usually about 7 or 8 years old. So, it's the same car seat. You take out some padding and use the same car seat for many years," Kajy said.
Statistics at the event painted a stark picture. Improper car seat use spikes injury risk by 71% during accidents. Staff from Southfield Police checked each installation.
Officer Kevin Jarett shared key tips with parents. "As an infant, they're not supposed to be facing forward," Jarett said.
The initiative eased the financial strain of buying safety equipment. Tecumseh resident Danielle Davison, an expectant mother, received a seat. "When you're thinking about safety, sometimes you're paying more for a safer seat, so it's good to know your baby is going to be safe," Davison said.
For Angeanette Weathersby, a Detroit mother with a newborn, the seat brought peace of mind. "My precious cargo. At least this way I know he's being protected once we get him in a car and secured properly," Weathersby said.
Looking ahead, the firm plans bigger giveaways with more seats. This event marks the start of National Child Passenger Safety Week, beginning this Sunday.
