An 8-week-old Cavalier King Charles puppy joined the Oakland County Sheriff's Comfort Canine Unit last Friday. The pup, named Buddy, now visits three Pontiac schools to support students dealing with stress.

On his first day, the tiny newcomer made stops at International Technical Academy, Pontiac Middle School, and Pontiac High School. School resource officer Detective Joe Garcia guides Buddy through his daily visits.

"The Pontiac School District is excited to welcome Deputy Buddy as our comfort K-9 to provide support to our students and staff during stressful times," Pontiac School District Superintendent Kimberly Leverette said in a statement per The Detroit News. "A hug or walk with Buddy creates an environment of care that is soothing and inviting and we are excited to have him join our Phoenix Nation family."

Community gifts funded Buddy's addition to the unit's 15-dog team. These trained companions work at schools and hospitals. They also show up at public gatherings and accident sites where people need a gentle presence.

Sheriff Michael Bouchard started this work six years ago when he saw more people struggling with stress. "I am so pleased to have the community support and the donations that have allowed us to have the most extensive trauma/comfort dog program in America," Bouchard said.

The sheriff, who works daily with Max - one of the first comfort dogs - picked Cavalier King Charles puppies for their ideal build and sweet nature. These dogs shine at making friends with new people. The American Kennel Club notes their natural skill with children and strong bond with handlers.

When times get rough, these four-legged friends step in. Their calming touch helps people push through hard moments and emotional storms.

As the newest and youngest team member, Buddy will keep visiting local schools. His work fits into the sheriff's office's bigger push to build stronger ties with students and families across Pontiac.
