This week, walls across Eastern Market transforms as seventeen Detroit artists pick up their brushes. The Murals in the Market festival returns to its roots, marking ten years of public art from September 15-22, 2025.

"It's very expensive supplying the paint, and then during the last several festivals, the artists have been getting a stipend for their work," said Jesse Cory, co-founder of 1XRUN, according to Bridge Detroit. "This year, with the support of our funders, we're able to cover all the expenses of the festival, and all the artists get compensated."

Money flows from big names this year - the Gilbert Family Foundation, General Motors, The Kresge Foundation, and Hudson-Webber Foundation stepped up. Art publisher 1XRUN teams with Eastern Market Development Corporation to make it happen.

After two years in Islandview, the paint cans come back home. Amy Fisher Price, Ed Irmen, Ijania Cortez, Kelly Golden, Sheefy Mcfly, and Tony WHLGN will make their mark on market walls.

Artists get free rein on their work - just no guns, blood, or bare bodies. At 2521 Riopelle Street, Bakpak Durden plans something fresh. "I'm excited to get started because I'm going to be trying some new things," Durden said.

Back in 2015, more than 45 artists kicked off the first festival. The spark came when Cory and his wife Roula David saw street art festivals abroad.

Right now, 1XRUN works to fix three old favorites: Henry Brantley's first-year piece, Zak Meers' "Welcome to Eastern Market" from year three, and Scott Hocking's 2018 "Seventeen Shitty Mountains."

Want to meet the artists? Head to UFO Bar in Corktown Tuesday at 9 p.m. On Wednesday at 7 p.m., catch "The Stories Behind the Murals" at the 1XRUN Warehouse.

Thursday at 6 p.m. marks Eastern Market After Dark - the big show. Streets fill with art shows, sellers, food trucks and pop-up galleries. New this year: a peek into 1XRUN's artist-in-residence history.

The weekend packs in more fun: Tony WHLGN shows at Spotlite Friday, kids paint on Saturday afternoon, and night owls party till late. Sunday winds down with tours - by foot or bike - through the market from noon to 4 p.m.
