Adults aged 60+ in three Michigan counties now have access to free transportation to cultural venues through September 30, 2025. The service spans Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties through a partnership between Michigan Activity Pass, The Library Network, and Wayne Metro.

The initiative provides transportation for seniors and a companion to destinations booked through MAP's website. "The Library Network, which runs the Michigan Activity Pass, received joint funding along with Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency to partner to help provide access to seniors who might find mobility to be a hurdle to going to destinations," said Jim Flury, technical services manager for The Library Network, according to The Oakland Press.

Participants must reside in one of the three counties and secure a MAP ticket to a location within the service area. Transportation requests need a week's notice through Wayne Metro's scheduling system.

This service aims to break down barriers that keep older residents from experiencing Michigan's rich cultural offerings. The MAP network connects users to nearly 400 libraries and 470 partner sites statewide.

Destinations include SEA LIFE Michigan, Cranbrook Science Center, and the Yankee Air Museum. Transportation extends to state parks, historic lighthouses, seasonal festivals and various museums across Michigan.

Starting as a Detroit metro initiative in 2007, MAP expanded statewide in 2013 with a shift to online operations. "In 2013, the program was converted to an all-online, statewide initiative, meaning patrons could 'check out' a MAP pass from anywhere in Michigan," Flury said.

A 2023 system upgrade introduced LocalHop, adding enhanced search capabilities and digital pass storage. Access requires just a valid library card.

Program administrators track ridership data to measure the service's impact. "We are collecting transportation usage metrics to help us assess outcomes from the service," Flury said.

Interested seniors can visit miactivitypass.org for passes and dial 313-388-9799 to schedule transportation. The website features a tutorial video explaining the booking steps.
