Detroit’s Sepia Coffee Kicks off $50,000 Kickstarter for Highland Park Spot

A new Kickstarter push aims to bring $50,000 to Sepia Coffee's next big expansion - a roastery and meeting place in Highland Park, Michigan. The two-week campaign marks a turning point for the growing business.

"We need to raise $50,000 to get the Highland Park location open," said Martell Mason, founder of Sepia Coffee, according to Click on Detroit. "What we are doing is going to truly help a city that has struggled."

Sales at their East Grand Boulevard spot in Detroit shot up fast. Now they need more space to meet demand.

The shop sources beans from small farms across four countries: Brazil, Colombia, Ethiopia, and Burundi. "Coffee is a very nostalgic thing. It connects us to our past. It connects us to the people," Mason said.

Mason picked his hometown of Highland Park with clear purpose. "Highland Park, unfortunately, is still underserved and undervalued," he stated. His vision stretches past coffee - he wants to spark new growth in the area.

With plans drawn and permits expected by November 2025, the space will mix coffee production with community spirit. Local business owners will find a new place to work, meet, and build connections.
