Monday, Nov. 10
As dusk falls Monday, the Lost Mariner's Remembrance marks its 26th year. Lanterns will shine at the bow anchor from 6 to 8 p.m., casting light into the growing dark.
That night in 1975, Lake Superior's fury proved too much for the mighty freighter. Each November, when arctic blasts meet the lakes' warmth, gales sweep across the waters. These clashes turn the lakes into deadly traps for ships caught in their grip.
The Lost Mariner's tribute draws crowds yearly, filling seats fast. Those wanting to attend either the brunch or evening ceremony can grab tickets through the Historical Society's site.
Belle Isle's Dossin Great Lakes Museum is ready to host. For this milestone, curators have crafted a special exhibit that sheds new light on the Fitzgerald's final voyage.
