Detroit schools will open a new charter program for young students facing tough life situations. Purpose Charter Academy starts in 2026, taking in 225 kids from pre-K through eighth grade who miss school often, lack homes, or face legal troubles.

The school's mission centers on bringing back students who've stepped away from learning. By 2029, they plan to teach 400 children through their specialized programs.

"A single school where the Board of Directors, budget and staff are all focused on serving the most at risk students allows a unique level of focus and program design around supporting deep-rooted trauma and instability," said Superintendent Nikolai Vitti according to Chalkbeat Detroit.

The board picked the old Detroit Lions Academy building on East Canfield Street as the school's new home. They signed off on a three-year agreement this past July.

Judge Cylenthia LaToye Miller from Michigan's Third Circuit Court leads a team of nine experts. The group includes attorney Lamar Moreland plus teachers, mental health specialists, and local leaders. They're still weighing whether to run things themselves or bring in outside help.

The city's schools face steep challenges. Six in ten students missed too many classes last year. Approximately 455 kids had no permanent home across Detroit and nearby areas.

Money troubles hit Detroit hard. Local poverty sits at triple the U.S. average, with 85% of school kids coming from cash-strapped homes.

Staff will need special skills to work with students who've faced court systems or lived through hard times. The school will join forces with local shelters, courts, and counselors to give kids extra support.

By 2028, the school must pay 9% of state funding for their building space. They might buy it outright that August. The district gets 3% for oversight - about $81,000 in the first year.

Detroit now runs 62 charter schoolss. Purpose Charter Academy breaks new ground as the first one made just for younger students who need extra help getting back on track.
