September 13-14, Detroit students can pick up free formal wear at the Samaritan Center. The shop stocks gowns, footwear, and sparkly add-ons for the big night. With sizes from zero through 28, the two-day event promises something for everyone.

Comerica Bank joined forces with Detroit's Jackets for Jobs to host the "2nd Annual Homecoming Dress Giveaway" mid-September. "Getting a dress for homecoming and prom is one of a young girl's biggest moments of high school, and we wanted to make them feel like Cinderella or the belle of the ball," said Alison Vaughn, CEO of Jackets for Jobs, according to Detroit Free Press.

What started as a small prom dress collection in 2017 has grown big. Kevin Watkins of Comerica Bank points out they've given away 10,000 dresses since then. Four years ago, the bank partnered up to add homecoming season to their giving plans.

The selection runs wild - from sweet and short to floor-length stunners. Students won't just find dresses. They'll spot shoes that shine, necklaces that glitter, and even some sharp tuxedos. Personal shoppers stand ready to help each student find their perfect match.

No need to show income proof or live in a specific area. Watkins stressed the urgency: "We really need as many people as possible to come out and pick up these dresses, pick up these shoes and these accessories, because we really just have an extraordinary amount to give away."

Throughout the year, Jackets for Jobs gives work clothes to those who need them. This dress event fits perfectly with their mission to provide formal attire to the community.

Find the shop at 5555 Conner Street in Detroit. Saturday's hours run 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., while Sunday welcomes visitors from noon to 3 p.m. Walk-ins work fine, though online sign-ups help. Each student gets to bring two dresses to the dressing room.
